I want to modify my vehicle, will this affect my Warranty?

We often receive queries from Mazda owners who are interested in modifying their vehicles, including changing tyre sizes. Whilst we understand that people wish to personalise their vehicle, we would like to remind everyone out there of a few important areas to consider before fitting any non-standard or non-factory components to their Mazda.

Mazda and their engineers carry out extensive testing to ensure that vehicles will perform reliably and safely under all operating conditions.  All of the parts fitted to your Mazda from the factory, and/or genuine Mazda Accessories added, have been tested to ensure they meet Mazda standards. Mazda has tested the components to ensure they are safe and will not interfere with any other systems in your vehicle.  Adding non-genuine components to your vehicle may affect its response to conditions and/or result in damage to other components.  We must point out that Mazda’s New Car Warranty may be compromised where a fault occurs that is related to, or caused by, a modification. Accessories

The dealer suggested I buy fabric protector, window tinting and/or paint protection. Are these Mazda products?

When considering the paint and/or fabric finish of our vehicle range, Mazda engineers go to great lengths to ensure that the materials and applications employed adhere to Mazda’s production guidelines and automotive industry standards. As such, we have confidence with the factory finishes on our vehicles. Tips on how to care for your Mazda can also be found in the 'Maintenance and Care' section in your Owner's Manual.
As each Mazda Dealership is an individual franchise, they may offer to sell additional applications for your vehicle.  Products / applications such as window tint treatment, fabric protection and/or paint protection are not Mazda Australia products. Due to this, should you have any queries in relation to these additional items, Mazda Australia cannot comment on its application to your vehicle.  If you require advice, we recommend you review the warranty documentation assigned to these applications and contact the supplier and/or your Dealer directly.

The Dealer didn't wash my car, isn't that part of servicing my Mazda?

If you have any questions relating to the cleaning of your vehicle, these should be directed to the Dealership itself. Vehicle cleaning is considered the responsibility of the owner, and is not assigned as part of Mazda's servicing Scheduled Maintenance. For tips and advice on maintaining your vehicle's interior and exterior we recommend you refer to your Owner's Manual chapter 'Maintenance and Care', section 'Owner Maintenance Schedule'.

As each Mazda Dealership is an individual franchise, some may offer cleaning, washing and vacuuming. Mazda does not have a list of Dealerships that are offering these services. To be able to provide cleaning services, Dealerships have to be able to address additional factors to ensure environmental factors are considered; from use of water and energy resources to reduction in contamination of surface waters, soil and groundwater. Where water restrictions are in place water reclamation systems are preferred in order to significantly reduce water usage. For these reasons, some Dealerships may not be able to provide cleaning services.

What is Turbo Charging?

Turbochargers are part of the engine and are a type of air induction system. A turbo compresses the air coming into the engine, which in turn allows more fuel to be added during the combustion process. This results in higher levels of power than would otherwise be possible from an engine of a particular size. By creating more power for very little weight increase the power-to-weight ratio is improved compared with a normally aspirated engine. Vehicle & Technical Information

How often should the engine oil be checked in my Mazda vehicle (Diesel & Petrol)?

As a standard maintenance procedure, all Mazda engines (diesel or petrol) should have a check of their engine oil every 1,000km. For the correct procedure of inspecting your Mazda’s engine’s oil level, please refer to the ‘Maintenance and Care’ section of your Owner’s Manual.

Generally, the engine oil should not need to be replaced until the first Scheduled Service interval at 6 months / 10,000k (whichever occurs first). However during a periodic inspection on a Diesel vehicle, should the oil level be close to, or exceed the X mark on your dip stick, it is important you take your vehicle to a Mazda Dealer for inspection and diagnosis of the situation. It is highly unlikely that this will be encountered; and any manufacturing faults are covered by the New Vehicle Warranty.

As the Mazda Diesel is a high performance, fuel efficient and reliable engine type, there are some differences in maintenance compared with those of a petrol engine. These differences particularly relate to engine oil and are perfectly normal for a diesel particulate filter-equipped vehicle. Diesel engines use oil differently to petrol engines, and regular monitoring ensures it is maintained within
the correct operating range. Mazda recommends checking your engine oil every 1,000km or every month, to ensure the high performance and longevity of your Mazda diesel. Again, information is available in the ‘Maintenance and Care’ section of your Owner’s Manual.
If you have additional queries relating to the cost of your vehicle's scheduled service, please feel free to discuss it with your Mazda servicing dealer, alternatively for more information regarding Servicing your Mazda, please click here.

Should I be feeling a pulsing sensation through my brake pedal when I braked very heavily?

This is normal and an indication your Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) was working to stop your car quickly whilst at the same time maintaining maneuverability. Most recent Mazda models are fitted with ABS. ABS systems work by monitoring wheel rotation. When a wheel is about to lock, hydraulic pressure is momentarily reduced to that whee,l preventing a skid. This momentary pressure reduction can sometimes be felt through the brake pedal as a pulse. Find out more about ABS technology here.

How can I install a child restraint in my Mazda? Where are anchor points?

Most Mazda vehicles have child-restraint anchor points installed; exceptions in the Mazda range include the MX-5 and BT-50 (ie. Single Cab Chassis & Freestyle Cab Utility).

For information on your Mazda's child-restraint system positioning, anchor point locations (when available) and installation, please refer to your Owner's Manual, under section: Essential Safety Equipment > Child Restraint. Locations may vary from model to model.

Note: You should never use an infant restraint in the front-passenger seat, and in particular when there are front-passenger airbags. The back seat of your car is considered much safer.

All child restraints used must have the Standards Australia mark. Installation positioning can be affected by the type of child-restraint system purchased, ensure you follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions as well when installing infant restraints. If you have any problems, we recommend asking an approved fitting station to help you; we understand these are provided by Automobile Associations and your State's road safety authorities. Kid safe provides information that may be of assistance.

Should I run my air conditioner even when the weather isn't hot?

Areas of the air-conditioning system under the hood operate at elevated temperature and pressure levels.
To keep the seals and compressor properly lubricated it is prudent to regularly circulate the air conditioning fluid through the pipes in the system. We recommend running the air conditioning for approximately 10 minutes every week summer and winter.

Does my air conditioner affect fuel economy?

Whilst all equipment that places a load on an engine affects fuel consumption, modern air conditioning systems are very efficient.
Mazda vehicles have excellent aerodynamics and the increased drag caused by driving with the windows lowered to cool the interior would likely result in an increase in consumption greater than any effect caused by using the air-conditioner.

What is 'space saver' or a temporary spare wheels?

Some Mazda vehicles are designed to be used with a temporary or 'space saver' spare wheel, and wheel dimensions vary according to the particular Mazda model. Our vehicle specification brochures and website information indicates if a temporary spare wheel is supplied with your Mazda.
Temporary spare wheels are popular with consumers due to the increase in cargo space and the reduction in weight they provide. They are completely safe to use on Australian roads when used in accordance with the directions in the Owner's Manual and comply with all relevant Australian standards.
Please note: if you choose to exchange the space saver wheel within your vehicle, the allocated storage space may not fit a full size. This cannot be modified by Mazda.

Why is the speed nominated on my GPS different from my vehicle's speedometer?

Mazda Corporation goes to great lengths to ensure all its components comply with both Mazda product performance guidelines and the Australian Design Rules. The current Australian Design Rule (ADR 18/03) indicates the speed shown on the speedometer must always be equal to or greater than the actual vehicle speed. ADR 18/03 allows approximately 10% variation at 100 km/h.

For more information refer to the Australian Government, Department of Infrastructure and Transport website. Whenever a speedometer is tested and found to conform to the relevant ADR, it is deemed to be within specification and not subject to any further rectification. For speedometers components operating correctly, there is no further calibration adjustment available.

When I rotate my tyres, should I include the spare or just rotate the four road wheels?

Tyre rotation is vital to achieving even tread wear and optimum tread life. Rotation is necessary because of different wear rates for each wheel position on the vehicle. The spare wheel is not required to be included in the tyre rotations. In front wheel drive cars the front tyres experience braking, steering and driving forces whilst the rear tyres only receive braking forces.

Note that tyres with unidirectional tread patterns are designed to operate only in the direction indicated. Tyres must always be rotated front to rear on the same side, so the direction of rotation does not change. Please consult your vehicle Owner's Manual, or speak to your Mazda Dealer's Service Department, for specific model advice.

Why is there a difference between the build date and compliance date of my car?

The vehicle build date is the date of manufacture. A compliance date is allocated in Australia when a vehicle is released from government bond. The difference between the two dates reflects the time taken to ship the vehicles to Australia. Mazda considers the Australian compliance date to be the year of the model.

What happens if Ad Blue® is not added? (Ie CX-7 Diesel)

Ad Blue is a clear, non-toxic aqueous urea solution used to treat exhaust on modern clean diesel engines. A four-segment indicator shows the amount of Ad Blue® in the tank. This indicator can be found in the odometer/trip meter display in the instrument cluster. The Ad Blue® tank needs to be refilled every 20,000km or every 2 years, whichever comes sooner during your regular Genuine Mazda Service.

If it falls to a certain level, the segment-type indication changes to an indication of the distance that can be driven with the remaining Ad Blue®, and the system starts phased warnings using various items such as the SCR warning light, SCR warning beep, and the warning message on the Multi Information Display (MID) for example:

• When the distance drops to about 2,400km, the SCR warning light flashes, the SCR warning beep sounds, and the warning on the MID turns on during engine startup
• When the distance drops to about 1,500km, the SCR warning light remains illuminated after engine startup
• When the distance drops to about 830km, the vehicle’s maximum speed is gradually restricted.
Then, if the distance drops to 0km, the warning light flashes. If it occurs while the vehicle is being driven, continued driving is possible but the engine cannot be started after it has been stopped.

I want to change the size of my wheels or tyres. Can Mazda help?

Mazda and their engineers carry out extensive testing to ensure that vehicles will perform reliably and safely under all operating conditions; from snow & ice to sweltering heat & everywhere in between.  All of the parts fitted to your Mazda from the factory have been tested to ensure they meet Mazda standards. The wheels fitted at factory are the only ones that Mazda has tested under all conditions to ensure they are safe and will not interfere with any other components or systems in your vehicle.

Fitting larger wheels/tyres can affect the operation of DSC, TCS, and RSC which also have very complex programming.  A seemingly insignificant change to the vehicle ride height or the size of a wheel/tyre may mean that these systems do not perform correctly. There may also be insufficient spacing between other components within the vicinity (such as the suspension strut, control arm, steering rack and brake calipers, etc.). This situation may result in very dangerous conditions where the driver may not be able to control the vehicle. A different wheel or tyre package may also have a different rolling circumference to standard, thereby affecting the accuracy of the odometer and speedometer readings.

We should also point out that Mazda’s New Passenger Car Warranty may be compromised where a fault occurs that is related to, or caused by, a modification. Mazda Australia does not recommend any modifications that have not been approved by the manufacturer.

Can my Mazda be converted to LPG?

Mazda does not offer LPG as an option for its current models, and does not recommend or endorse any aftermarket LPG conversion kits for retrofit to its vehicles.

Converting your Mazda to operate on LPG may adversely impact your New Vehicle Warranty if it is determined the use of LPG, or if the fitting and maintenance of the LPG equipment, has precipitated any concern with your vehicle. Any rectification in these circumstances would be a retail matter.
