Tech Drive: How to Charge the Mazda 6e

Mazda 6e Tech Drive: Charging

Powering up the first-ever Mazda 6e is plug-and-play simple.

The all-electric Mazda 6e delivers up to 190 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque thanks to its rear axle-mounted electric motor. This highly efficient drive unit is powered by an onboard 78 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) high-voltage battery.

Regenerative braking, which occurs during deceleration and stopping, converts the electric motor into a generator that produces electrical power that is fed into the battery. Recharging the battery with a dedicated EV battery charger – or suitable wall socket – is just as simple.

Karl Reindler shows you how in this short video.

Mazda Tech Drive: Everything You Need to Know About Charging the Mazda 6e

Karl Reindler: Welcome to Mazda Tech Drive. Today we're taking a closer look at one of the most important aspects of electric vehicle ownership: charging your Mazda 6e.

AC and DC Charging Explained

The Mazda 6e can be charged using two different methods: AC charging (Alternating Current) and DC charging (Direct Current).

Charging at Home

For many drivers, AC charging will be the most familiar and convenient option. It can be done from the comfort of home using a standard 10-amp household power outlet or a dedicated home wall box charger.

This makes it easy to charge the vehicle while parked at home, helping ensure the battery is ready for your next journey.

Charging away from home

DC charging is typically available through public charging infrastructure and is designed to provide faster charging speeds. This can be particularly useful when travelling longer distances or when you need to recharge the battery more quickly while away from home.

The Mazda 6e comes standard with a portable charging cable. One end connects to a standard household power outlet, while the other features a Type 2 connector designed for AC charging.

In practice, AC charging at home takes around 8 hours for a full 0–100% charge, while DC fast charging can take the battery from 30–80% in about 15 minutes.

  • AC (home): approx. 8 hours, 0–100%*
  • DC (fast/public): approx. 15 minutes, 30–80%*

*Charging time varies depending on charger capacity, battery and ambient temperature and other factors.

How to Charge Your Mazda 6e, Step by Step

To begin charging, open the charging flap located on the rear right-hand side of the vehicle and remove the charging port cap.

Connect the charging cable to the vehicle and ensure it is securely connected. Once connected correctly, charging will begin automatically.

How to Tell It's Charging

The Mazda 6e provides clear visual confirmation that charging is underway. Signature lighting at the front and rear of the vehicle will illuminate in a distinctive pattern, while the vehicle's Human Machine Interface (HMI) display will show charging information and battery status.

Many public charging stations will also display charging progress, allowing drivers to monitor the session while charging.

When charging is complete, or when you're ready to continue your journey, simply unlock the vehicle, disconnect the charging cable and return it to the charger.

Charging the Mazda 6e has been designed to be straightforward and convenient, whether you're charging at home or using Australia's growing public charging network.
