As I’m driving along, my Tyre Pressure Monitoring System has alerted me to a potential issue with one of the tyres. A flat tyre can happen at any time, so here are some quick safety tips on how to change it within a few minutes.
One of the many features of the Mazda BT-50 is the full-size spare wheel and tyre that comes with every vehicle. Whether you’re off-road in the bush or on the highway, you’re never limited by a space-saver spare.
Safety first:
- Apply the handbrake.
- Put the vehicle into reverse for manual transmission or park for automatic.
- When the vehicle is raised, never go under the car. Keep all passengers away and give yourself plenty of space.
Step 1: Prepare the spare tyre
- Assemble the spare tyre removal bars and jack, located behind the rear seat.
- Ensure the concave side of the bar inserts into the screwdriver end of the bar and tighten by hand or with the supplied screwdriver.
- Reinsert the bar into the spare tyre carrier hole and turn counterclockwise to lower the spare wheel.
- Once on the ground, remove the spare tyre carrier through the centre of the wheel.
Step 2: Lift the vehicle
- Place the jack under the correct jacking locations (see owner’s manual).
- Raise the vehicle slightly and remove the wheel cover if installed.
- Loosen all wheel nuts, but do not remove them yet.
- Continue raising the vehicle until the tyre is slightly off the ground.
Step 3: Remove the flat tyre
- Remove all wheel nuts.
- Take off the deflated tyre.
Step 4: Install the spare tyre
- Check the new tyre for any obvious signs of damage.
- Align the bolt holes of the spare tyre with the studs on the hub.
- Raise the tyre carefully onto the hub and secure with the wheel nuts, tapered end facing inwards.
- Tighten the nuts by hand in 2–3 passes while the vehicle is still raised.
Step 5: Lower the vehicle and final tightening
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Tighten the wheel nuts to the manufacturer’s specification of 120 Nm (see owner’s manual).
And that’s it—a simple, safe way to change a spare tyre on a Mazda BT-50. Stay safe and drive on.
